Operating Events ...
Another interesting aspect of amateur radio are the operating events that are enthusiastically engaged in by
many of these hobbyists.
Many organizations sponsor such events, including the FISTS organization. FISTS (http://www.fists.org) is an organization that
is dedicated to the promotion of the
use of morse code as a communications technique.
The term "fists" refers to the way the telegraph key is held by the operator.
Why maintain this (considered ancient by some) technique? Emergency communications can be accomplished via very primative
equipment using this technique. Such equipment might be fashioned from the limited resources to be found (perhaps)
in an emergency situation.
