One of the greatest things about amateur radio is the breadth of the hobby. It is possible to
find a special interest within the hobby to satisfy nearly anyone.

When I talk about amateur radio to newcomers, they might respond with the query "Why don't
you just use a cell phone? Of course, the questioner has just missed most of the point of the
hobby. We don't just jabber with another person in a distant place. No, we jabber with that
person with (perhaps) equipment that we have designed and/or built ourselves.
In some cases we
may have
resurrected 50 year old antiques to do the job. When we eventually do connect with that person in
some other county, state, or country, we automatically have a common interest about which to converse.
